Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Look for a pushchair that folds in one step and is easy to put into your boot. You may also prefer a lighter design, especially if you're tackling busy high streets.

Side-by-Side

They are the most commonly used type of double pushchair, and usually can accommodate two children together. They are generally wider than single pushchairs. This means they may be less nimble on the footpaths and may be a little tricky to navigate through kerbs when a car seat is attached. The extra size allows them to move more easily through doors and are more evenly distributed, so it is easier on your back.

Many models can be used from birth as twin prams, and can take a carrycot, or two car seats. Some models can be converted into one mode by adding a basket alongside (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the most impressive examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in twin pushchair Mode, allows you to put the rear seat and carrycot side-by-side. This creates a totally enclosed space for twins and is perfect for infants. The pram and travel system comes with really cool accessories, like the newborn cocoons that can be attached either facing toward the forward direction or in any direction (for twin-facing prams). It's not as light as other options, but it's very well thought out.

The clever frame can be expanded to take an additional seat, and you can use it as a twin from birth, thanks to the addition of two infant cocoons (PS59 each) that provide enclosed, lie-flat areas for babies. It can also be used as an individual mode with only one child due to a large basket that sits behind the seat. Tandem

If you plan to have twins you will require a pushchair that is tandem. This allows the children to sit together and see each other. They are great for trips to the zoo, as children can watch the animals together. These are also great for parents who wish to watch their toddler and baby simultaneously.

Some tandem pushchairs provide ultra flexibility as they can convert back to single mode. This is particularly useful for families with more than two kids (or only your oldest doesn't need a buggy anymore). This will save you from having to store a buggy that's empty which can be expensive.

The Cybex Venus, for example, can be used either in double or mono mode. The frame can be expanded to allow for an additional seat. It's not the lightest of pushchairs, however it comes with an enormous shopping basket which is located behind the front seat in double mode (and in the back of the seat in mono mode). The seats can be placed so that they face each other, or one can be set higher so that it can see over the other and see what they are doing.

Other double tandem pushchairs like the Joolz Geo 3 can seat one on top of the other or side-byside. The compact, sleek frame makes it easier to navigate through doorways and supermarket aisles. Certain models can be used on uneven terrain or for a jogging walk thanks to their large rear wheels and four-wheel suspension.

Another advantage of a tandem pushchair is that it can take two carrycots, or a car seat, and buggy seat. You can save money by establishing a travel stroller system at the beginning and avoiding separate purchases. Remember that tandems are heavier and longer and may appear less stable when bumping up the kerbs or going over uneven surfaces. They also have to be dismantled to fit in cars.
