After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
